PB HLTH 162A Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, David Vetter, Innate Immune System
Document Summary
Without immune system we would not survive long. Hiv virus; take up cellular machinery and cannot replicate without a host. Very di erent; have di erent ways of infecting; di erent morphology. And yet, the immune system are able to protect us from all of these pathogens. The immune response has to be able to identify and respond to many di erent, diverse pathogens. But at the same time, it has to be able to distinguish pathogenic from non-pathogenic variant. Pathogens and non-pathogens can be very similar: coli. Some strains are pathogenic and some are non-pathogenic. Only small percentage of the genes are unique to the pathogenic species. Immune response must be able to distinguish between the two! Must be able to respond to the pathogenic e. coli and eliminate it. We are covered and filled with microbes to which we should respond. We our covered with microbes to which our immune response should not initiate a response.
