Three general economic sectors according to the classical 1950s scheme: Primary sector. extraction activities: farming, fishing, mining, logging. Requires living out in remote and lower-density areas. Secondary sector. manufacturing: clothing, machines, toys, refining, electronics. Tertiary sector. services, both low and high-end: retail, cleaning, deliveries, security, construction, litigation, design, research, surgery. These jobs all depend upon having a large enough market to make them feasible. They are the linkage between social processes and the creation of the built environment. Households as the nexus of urban patterns: economy, transport, housing, education, infrastructure, health. This happens when overall conditions improve the chances that a whole population will live longer. Peace; water-treatment; sewage; garbage-collection; frequent washing; food safety; preventive medicine; antibiotics note that most of the changes are urban-scale infrastructure and institutional changes. Once families could reasonably expect all children to grow to adulthood, no need for more than 2 children. Once parenting becomes optional, many people wisely choose not to have kids.
