Very rapid urban growth, larger and faster than ever before. Fuelled by demographic transitions, and by global economic change that promotes urbanization. Global urbanization will be mostly complete in 30 years. Major change in urban environments is associated with the fact that most urban growth is now in poor countries. Urban environmental challenges are different than 19th ce. Urbanization patterns of the next 40 years will be critical to the long-run sustainability and livability of the planet. World urban population is projected to grow by just over 3 billion from 3. 29 billion in 2007 to 6. 4 billion in 2050. 93% of the growth will be in developing countries in the global south. All of that growth will be in cities, rural pop will decline.
