Oxygen as to travel through blood, attached to hemoglobin. South pole fish do not have hemoglobin. Blood is so cold, colder than 0 c, it can dissolve oxygen very well. Glass pipe with mercury, flipped it upside down, measure pressure. Pressure- how much force that is exerted by some substance. Partial pressure, because there are many gasses. Look at the saturation of hemoglobin, how much is saturated by oxygen. Half saturation pressure- how much pressure does it have to be saturated under to be 50. Decrease partial pressure you dissociate the saturation. Second binding is very hard, third is easier aka sigmoidal curve. Cooperativity- the way 4 units work together to produce this curve. More partial pressure of oxygen needed to get saturated= low affinity (right shift) Less partial pressure needed to get it saturated = high affinity (left shift) Mackerel- swims fast which increases pressure, lower affinity.
