Curare (quaternary ammonium), a toxin found in south america has been used by natives on their arrows. It causes muscle paralysis but in the 40s it was found to not cause analgesia or alter consciousness. Neurons with this transmitter are called cholinergic: we have these receptors because many animals have evolved to protect against it, synthesis. This reaction is determined by how much of the substrate there is because there is no feedback. So we can drive this by giving precursor. This was for the older techniques: they used to use rabbits and inject them with human. It was by luck to get a rabbit to harvest the antibodies since they don"t live long and they already produce mao. The newer technique of tracing with antibodies (w/fluorescence) has made tracing easier: mono- cloning technique. Rate of ach synthesis is controlled by: availability of precursors, rate of cell firing.
