Durkheim and modern solidarity: premodern societies: everyone was alike (limited d of l), knew and interacted with members of society. Mechanical solidarity : modern societies: much larger so people didn"t know everyone, division of labour causing differences. Created unity through dependence: based on division of labour, difference, organic solidarity , anomie: normlessness and angst arising during the transition from mechanical to organic solidarity. Weber: modernity as multifaceted symbolic interactionist: looked at modernity in a much broader fashion than either marx or durkheim. Saw modernity as arising because of the economy, politics, religion, education, etc: states: played major role in rise of modernity, religion: contributed to capitalist development. Ideal and material: weber saw modernity as arising because of both ideal and material forces. Although he is commonly recognized for his attention to ideal: rationalization, rationalization: influence of logic and efficiency on social relations instead of morality and tradition.
