Durkheim: modernity as the growth of complex society. Durkheim"s view of modernity was enormously different than that of marx. Didn"t simply focus on its materialist dimensions. Looked at influence of both material and ideal. Consensus: disregarded conflict and considered more peaceful processes leading to modernity. Positive view: had much more of a positive view of modernity than either marx or weber progressive. Although still saw modernity as disruptive in its initial phases. Durkheim was most interested in the forces that hold societies together (i. e. , social integration) Looked for forces binding individuals into a whole. Collective conscience: the communal beliefs, morals, and attitudes of a society. Durkheim believed modernity promoted a new type of collective conscience. Created a fundamentally different type of society. The people combined into a different entity. Premodern societies: everyone was alike (limited d of l), knew and interacted with members of society. Modern societies: much larger so people didn"t know everyone, division of labour causing differences.
