Document Summary

Though laws of queer behavior vary across the globe, laws regarding the impersonation of the opposite sex seems to be far-reaching and surprisingly commonplace. There have been many convictions to cisgenders (they have sex with a person and then the person says they wouldn"t have consented if they had known in the first place that they were originally men or women). The cases are undoubtedly about the policing and punishment of gender non-conformity and not about the protection of the innocent victims from deceit or sexual assault. Many states in the us have laws against wearing a disguise or masquerading in public. Trans people continue to be arrested throughout the country. While law enforcement in the us must now find creative ways (ex: solicitation laws) to arrest people for their gender nonconformity, laws similar to the old masquerade laws of the us are still found in other countries today.
