CJS 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: No Offence, Road Traffic Safety, General Order
Document Summary
Understand the range of police strategies and evidence of their effectiveness. Many people have an image of police as crime fighters, such as chasing armed robbers through buildings and down streets, or forensically examining data or witnesses. However, this is only a small part of total police work. There are also some operational police work (e. g. patrol, road safety (including alcohol and drug buses), community engagement, paperwork, maintain public order and respond to critical incidents). The literature is clear that crime fighting is only part of what police do, and a good deal of police work is about general order maintenance. Clearance rates demonstrate the number of cases that are solved" annually: Perpetrator known but not charged (deceased or under-age). Policing is increasingly delivered by non-state personnel via the re-birth of private policing , growing plural policing and the more general formalisation of social control, involving public, private and hybrid forms of policing.
