Document Summary

Diagnosis of kidney disease and overall assessment of kidney function require biochemical tests and morphological (form and structure) evaluation of the organ function. Kidney function commonly measured by the glomerular filtration rate (gfr) Gfr is reflected in clearance tests that measure the rate at which substances are cleared from the plasma by the glomeruli. Gfr is defined as the rate at which the kidneys form filtrate. Morphological evaluation includes microscopic evaluation of urine, radiological evaluation, and biopsy of the organ. It is the filtration ability of the glomerulus. Used as an index of kidney function. Refers to kidney disorders that cause urinary protein losses typically > 3 grams. Arises from damage to glomeruli and increases permeability to plasma proteins. Can progress to renal failure in some cases. Causes: glomerular disorders, diabetic nephropathy, immunological & hereditary diseases, infections (involving kidneys or elsewhere in body), chemical damage (from medications or illicit drugs), and some cancers per day (proteinuria)
