The first important society in the greek world was on crete. Cities in greece were governed by monarchs. Minoan- archaeological evidence of early civilization in crete; villa known as the palace of. Minos, which is why the early society is called minoan. Monster that lived in a labyrinth that devoured boys and girls sent as tribute. Greeks have a dim recollection of a ruler. Minos cleared the seas of piracy, captured islands, and placed his sons in control over them . Discovered and funded the restoration of the palace of minos: including the wall paintings. The palace had an extensive plumbing system made from clay pipes; also had a courtyard and grand staircase. The walls were decorated with frescoes focusing on nature. Knossos was the wealthiest crete city, and the king had an efficient bureaucracy. While women were respected (often depicted in gowns and jewels), men were the rulers of society (as priests or kings)
