May discriminate by size and limited quantity; does not have one-to-one correspondence. Speed of processing - plays a role in language development. Speed of processing: how quickly infants understand speech that they hear. Processing speed gets faster fro 15 to 24 months. By 24 months, infants can look at an object before the word has even ended. Speed of processing at age 18 months predicts blooming in productive vocabulary among late talking infants. Processing known words quickly can help children to learn new words. Vocal play produces sound and play around with it. The order that these come in | know it.
