ECE 343 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Behaviorism, Pragmatics, Emergentism
Document Summary
Is the systematic and conventional use of sounds (or signs or written symbols) for the purpose of communication or self-expression (crystal, 1975) Preintentional -- from birth to 8 months - (automatic response) 9 to 10 months intentional communicators (pointing something) Nurture supported by your environment (environmental component) Nature what you are born with (genetic component) Behaviorist theory (we acquire language because we are reinforcing language) Learning occurs when an environmental stimulus triggers a response or behavior. When we reward or punish behaviors, we can increase positive behaviors or decrease negative behaviors. So language is produced because caregivers selectively reinforce words. Cracker reinforced when says kaka and then slowly shaped into adult form. Associated terms: reinforcement, extinction, antecedent, punishment, chaining. Drill and dtt (discrete trial training) when you present a task, you do it and reinforce child to do it. Focus on discrete, isolated aspects of language. Limitations: have to reward every time, use it in a real-world situation.
