Philosophy looks to find the root and the in depth definition of what is, science is more surface level. A theory gives you an argument and frame work. If the frame work is bad (science), then you would have to go back an change the theory. Philosophy can force you into believing in religion. He is looking for protection to write these works. Socrates was more of a conversation/dialogue and descartes is trying to build more of a solid foundation. Socrates argues against and descartes argues for. Perhaps philosophy is just therapy to work out the anxieties that you have. He imagines that there is an evil demon tricking him at every moment. Evil demon distorts all of the information coming in: There is a man running around questioning his own slogan (i can"t doubt that i doubt while i"m doubting) He affirms his existences not in spite of, but because of, the evil genius.
