The discipline of medical social work that i chose is palliative care. Palliative care is specialized type of care for those facing a life-limiting illness, their families and their caregivers. People who are hospice programs along with their families get complete palliative care from the members of the hospice team. The goal of palliative care is to maximize quality of life. It focuses on symptom control, rather than control of the cancer and treats physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. The case is about claire who is a 60-year-old caucasian female. Claire has been married to her husband for over 35 years and as two adult grown children. Recently claire had been admitted to the hospital due to a double mastectomy due to her recent breast cancer diagnosis. Claire and her family remain unclear of her prognosis. Palliative care seeks to prevent or relieve pain which can be physical, psychosocial, or spiritual and other symptoms associated with serious illness.
