Most ppl die from one or more chronic illnesses & often demonstrate a predictable slow decline. Emphasis in medical care is on technology, cure, & life prolongation. Patients are staying in the sick role, rather then entering the dying role & are receiving interventions designed for cure & recovery. Today: hospice palliative care - supplied a way for comfortable death. The most common misconception is that palliative care refers to a person that is at the end of their life - held my most of society. Looking at alieving pain & suffering of a patient diagnosed with a life threatening illness - in theory, should begin when diagnosed. Domains of need vary depending on how far along the disease trajectory of the patient is (just diagnosed & having active treatment vs patient at end of life) Provides relief from pain & other distressing symptoms. Affirms life & regards dying as a normal process.
