Objectives: to understand the communication process, to recognize key elements of e ective communication, to establish a strategic approach to writing, to learn to structure for results. A speci c condition that invites discourse to alter its reality: exigence. A thing which is other than it should be: audience. Mediator of the change that the discourse functions to produce: constraints. Persons, events, objects, and relations that have the power to a ect decision and action needed to modify the exigence. What"s your goal: what do you want to achieve? (rhetorical situation) To inform: convey information, make an announcement, acknowledge performance. Reader response = i understand (no action) To persuade: sell a product/idea, get approval, give instructions, request assistance, change a process. Reader response = i"ll do it (take action) Communication model: tell < > someone < > something. Who is your audience: analysis, understanding, demographics, interests, environment, needs, customization, expectations.
