Lesbian, gay, and transgendered people and their families: ^-criminalization of queer folks and the riots that emerged marked the beginning of the gay liberation movement. Alongside the civil rights movement and feminism movement, we have the growing gay liberation movement. It was in the mid-19th century, in which being identified as a homosexual was thought to be a mental illness: psychiatric manuals. It wasn"t until 1960, linked with the riot and the discontent of these individuals, in which the criminalization of homosexual relations was no longer such. It wasn"t until 1973, in which homosexuality was removed from the dsm-psychiatric manual. Individuals who fall outside of the parent boundaries of bodies and the gender binary, as being straight, female, feminine, male, masculine, etc. , has a history of criminalization. We have a much more nuanced awareness now of the lives of individuals who don"t identify as straight. In 2005, in canada, same-sex marriages became legal.
