Lecture 19: trans activism: 1960s was the time of the civil rights movement, the feminist movement, and the gay. July 19 2005: the federal civil marriage act legalizes same-sex marriage across canada: gay marriage was a victory for lgbt rights in canada. During the 90s there is an explosion of trans activism, The political movement of trans people to end gid clinics (a feat which has actually been accomplished) The shift from a model that limited trans people"s expression to a new trans model that allows for complex identifications. While trans people still battle discrimination on a daily basis, there is more of a collective movement that can challenge these oppressions. Now trans people and trans and trans positive clinicians, and academics are being asked to write briefs for the ever-evolving harry benjamin criteria. The era of the gid clinic holding trans people hostage through their application of strict criteria is ended.
