Lecture 16
Mind & Brain
o What is the difference between dualism and
monism with respect to the issue of mind & brain?
Dualism: Mind and brain are made of different
substances, but they do interact.
Descartes believed that the brain is physical while the
mind is nonphysical. He also believed that interaction
between the two occurred at the pineal gland.
Monism: Only one kind of substance.
Most commonly held scientific version of this view is
called the monistic emergent property position, which
holds that the mind results from brain activity. In other
words, the brain creates/enables the mind.
o What is the mental trilogy?
Mind (Self) =
Cognition
Emotion
