Lecture 45
Perception and Attention
Perceiving the world
We perceive the world as seamless and it feels to us that
we are indirectly picking up information
We build up our picture of the world through little glances
Your brain constructs the world (i.e. we see everything in
a 3rd dimension with depth)
We see photons reflected off of material.
Specialized Visual Detectors
Edge Detectors: respond to border between light and
dark
They have specialized neurons that fire or don’t fire when
they encounter or don’t encounter information
Moving Contrast Detectors: respond to moving edges
Dimming Detectors: respond to changes in overall
illumination
