We can"t be conscious or aware of everything. There is active mental processing even when you"re asleep for example, we don"t fall out of bed when asleep and we hear the cry of a baby but not the thunderstorm. When performing an action our mind wanders 20-40% of the time. When you have past thoughts which are unrelated to what you currently have going on. Zoning out: ignoring or no longer listening without realizing you"ve done so.
