Improving the Process of Group Decision Making
1. Ensuring that a Diversity of Information and Perspective
• Depends on members task specific skills and their facility in
managing external relations
• Members selected on a basis of their knowledge and skill
• Three general skills relevant to all tasks: intelligence, creativity,
and practicality
• Manage external relations with consistency and other groups well
• Know how to communicate well:
o Too much information communication reduces flexibility
o Too little information late in the situation reduces acceptance
of negotiated agreement
• Group members need skills to play four distinct external roles:
o Scout main source of external information about markets,
technology and competition
o Ambassador handles the information channel between
the group and upper management
▪ Take on joint responsibilities of acquiring resources for
the group and buffering the group from political
organizational policies
o Coordinator handle the groups lateral communications
and other groups with which the group is interdependent
o Guard designed to keep information and resources inside
the group
