KINE 2011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Epithelium, Cell Membrane, Cell Adhesion
Document Summary
Cell adhesion molecule: cam: cadherin, extracellular matrix (ecm) Outside of the cell: special cell junction. Collagen: form cable like fibres: gives cells not to be able to be pulled around easily. Important for cells to move: fibroblast: produces fibres. Specialized cell junctions: directly to the cells, desmosomes (adhering junctions): Spot rivets: anchor two adjacent but non-touching cells. Makes it more difficult to pull: tight junctions (impermeable junction): Connecting two cells directly no passageway between the two cells. Found in epithelial tissue that cover the body and line internal cavities. Impearmeable: no fluid can go through: gap junctions (communication junctions: A gap that that is connected by tunnels formed by connexions which allows passage of small molecules (mostly water soluble) Synchronized contraction of a whole muscle cell, it allows movement of ions to transmit electrical activity. Membrane permeable: allows molecules can go through. Selective permeable: select molecules to go through. Two properties influence a substance that can go through: soluble.
