Jesus proclaimed that what was caesar"s should be given to caesar. At the same time, christianity was political from the very beginning: therefore, there was a constant conflict between the spiritual and the secular functions of the church. In about 330 ad, the roman emperor constantine converted to christianity. Intolerance was much stronger coming from christians then from paganism. In the medieval age, the church was at the center of religious, cultural, social, artistic and political life: all rulers or kings in europe had to declare themselves christian monarchs. The idea of divine right: however, certain secular movements began to arise, of particular importance was the italian renaissance. Now for the first time, to any significant degree, rulers had to deal with citizens of different and often conflicting faiths. He claimed that it was impossible for the truth to contradict with the wishes of god.
