GEOG 2500 Lecture Notes - Podzol, Solonetz, Chernozem
Document Summary
Molic epipedon is on the top part of the chalky white calcic horizon, on a chernozem. Podzols are typically in coniferous orders, due to the high acidity. Solonetz does not have a lot of organic matter at the top, and it is indicated by desert vegetation. Desertification; when water is dried from land, and often dessication cracks are formed. Salinization occurs when soil is cultivated, heavily grazed, then displays an excess of salt. Irrigation water evaporates, leaving salt behind, and soils can become sodic. Salts from weathered parent material will migrate to the surface. In dry environments, there is not enough precipitation to get rid of the salt, and leaching occurs. There is a fair bit of clay accumulation in a lower layer, when there is precipitation due to the abundance of salt. Calciums and charges on ca tend to bind together clay particles.
