Large dams & development: navigation, shipping, & commerce (images) The three gorges slowed down the river, locks changed the water level. (15000 miles inland). Therefore, the ships were able to get to chongqing. This is largely important for bringing about the national development. Currently china gets 70% of power from burning coal: this is a problem because its bad for the environment, air pollution, and global warming. (pumping carbon into the atmosphere). Hydro-power as a green alternative to coal.
