Australia: Capitalism and Climate Change
There are two reasons the northern hemisphere is heating up faster:
The northern hemisphere as a whole, has a much higher proportion of land to sea than the
southern hemisphere. The land heats up faster daily than the sea.
The currents in the ocean move warm water from the equator to the northern hemisphere.
Climate change is very geographically unequal.
Perth is the most isolated city in the world.
Australia is the oldest and flattest continent. It has the most venomous animals in the world.
More than 80% of the population lives in large cities. Both familiar and exotic.
Australia was originally settled by the Aborigines. It was originally a place to send convicts. It
was followed by a flood in the late 1800’s when gold was discovered in southern Australia,
Chinese came to do all of the jobs Europeans didn’t want to do. In 1901 they became
independent, and introduced a White Australian policy. Most infamous was the “typewriter
test”.
In the mid 1970’s Australia began to change its policies, started immigrating people based
on their skills. Australia is now officially a multicultural society.
Just like Canada, Australia has oppressed their indigenous societies. From the 19th to 20th
centuries it was legal to kill Aborigines. Residential schools were prevalent. The result is the
Aboriginal population deals with a number of social issues.
Immigration is a huge conflict in Australia. There is an ongoing debate as to whom and how
many peoples should be able to immigrate to Australia.

● Wealthy
● Resource dependent
● World’s largest coal exporter
● Much wealthier than New Zealand and any of the pacific islands
● Mining accounts for more than 7.6% of economic production, but only produces 1.9%
of jobs
Political Legacies:
● Parliamentary democracy
● Best armed state in Oceania
● Part of international military alliances
● Most powerful state in Oceania
