Re-envisioning History
- Indigenous peoples have occupied the parts of this ancient land or at least 65000
years, and are the oldest surviving culture on earth
- Austalia as ot disoeed – its lands were forcibly taken
- Indigenous peoples resisted colonisation, and have been active agents in negotiating
and renegotiating their position in relation to the colonisers
- Indigenous peoples and cultures continue to survive and thrive
- Colonial power continues, and non-Indigenous Australians are its beneficiaries
From Raymond Evans, A History of Queensland (2007)
- Chronology
o 50 000 60 000 years ago: Human occupation begins via the South Asian
archipelago
o 15 000 years ago: Ice Age draws to a close as oceans encroach on greater
land mass
o 6 000 years ago: Queensland assumes approximately its present shape

million years old.
Formation of the world we know today
- By the time the first primates were evolving, the landmass we call Australia had
broken from Antarctica
- Through the continental drift, super continent Pangaea eventually broke up to form
northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere and then the continents we know
today
- 195-200 thousand years ago, humans appear in Africa
- 100 thousand years ago, evidence of homo sapiens moving from Africa. Evidence
that they got as far as Australia
Understanding the Past
- What we know now (in non-Indigenous terms) results from 200 years of expanding
knowledge
- The first Europeans to see Australia could have had little or no means of
oeptualisig histo o the kid of sale ee talkig aout
- Knowledge of geological time begins in similar period to colonisation
