The elements of art are components of a work of art that can be isolated and defined. They are building blocks to create a work of art. An indefinable path created by a point moving in space. One dimensional and can vary in width direction and length. Can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or straight. Horizontal: lines suggest a feeling of rest of repose because objects parallel to the earth are at rest. The lines portray sections of landscape, which recede into space. Vertical: lines communicate a sense of height because they are perpendicular to the earth, extending upwards to the sky. Horizontal and vertical lines used in combination: communicate stability and solidity. Rectangular forms with 90 degree angles are structurally stable. Diagonal lines convey a feeling of movement. They are either about to fall, or are in motion. The curve of a line can convey energy.
