He was an extremely important social activist but his work went unrecognized for many years. His work in research and survey methodology was cutting edge. One of the main founders of the naacp. Never got published in mainstream sociology journals. Sociologists argue these are not as straight forward as many would think. Much like gender and sexuality they are socially constructed categories. Skin colour/ race matters because people believe that it does. Biology and genetics may tell us there is only one human race but individuals believe there are many different races: race matters because people believe that it does. Racism is taught by families, peer groups, mass media.
