Race: physical markers/characteristics that distinguish one group of people from another. Things aren"t so clear cut tiger woods: cablnasian . Sociologists aren"t interested in genetics/physical; interested in the socially constructed. Social-psychological theories: frustration-aggression (scapegoat) theory, frustration aggression vented on scapegoats (member of lesser, example: white woman in fish market taking out anger on minority- group gets blamed) race co-workers. Racism can be taught by families, peer groups, mass media. Cartoons: characters (protagonist) middle class, normal voice, villains: accents, shape of eyes, darker complexion, etc. Children become sensitive to dialect at a very young age. Reel bad arabs documentary, stereotypes of arabs (terrorist, belly dancer, etc. ) Absence of representation: certain people don"t count, stories aren"t important or don"t exist, etc.
