Causes: modern sciences, diversity of religions, individualism, technology less likely to turn to religious authorities than scienti c resources for answers; religion and science con ict each other. In modern society there are many different religious beliefs, which takes away one religions power to have a monopoly over peoples minds. Society also supports pluralism (respecting other peoples beliefs and cultures). Modern society becomes too individualistic pulls people away from religion. fetishization of commodity: consumerism is the new religion.
