Cognitive and behavioural efforts used by an individual to decrease the effects of stress . Constantly changing cognitive and behavioural efforts to manage specific external and/or internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of the person . Active confronting style: directed internally (alter thinking/motivation new, directed externally (alter enviro gather info, support) goals, emotion-focused coping (efc) Not changing the situation just trying to feel better: cognitive efforts (change meaning minimize, reframe, behavioral efforts (regulate feelings meditation, relaxation, avoidance-focused coping (afc) Efforts to disengage from the situation: cognitive efforts (denial, though stopping, cognitive, behavioural efforts (physical distraction, negative distractions) behavior) Efc = when the stressor is uncontrollable (ex. loss of coach) -> not effective over the long haul. Classified into 3 categories: psych training, phys training/strategizing, relaxation. Coping = conscious/unconscious effort to deal with stress. Doesn"t have to result in a positive outcome! Remember: stress is an ongoing process may use many different strategies to cope!
