It"s the efforts we take to manage situations that we appraise as being potentially harmful/stressful. Chapter 10: cognitive & behavioural approaches: general types of coping strategies. Dealing with the perceived caused of distress, eg. i made a plan of action & i followed it. Best when you need to exert a high level of control over the stressor. Managing the distress caused by the problem, eg. i got busy w/ other things to help me feel better. Best when you can exert little/no control over the stressor. Eg. confiding fears & worries to friend, seeking reassurance from ppl you know, getting advice from others, etc. Emerged in the 90s & refers to using one"s values, beliefs & goals to shape meaning in stressful situations that are generally not conducing to the use of.
