OL109 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Information Overload
Document Summary
The nature of listening: most time is spent listening, 28% media listening, 28% interpersonal listening, 17% speaking, 16% reading, 11% writing. Reasons for listening: to understand and remember, to evaluate, to build and maintain relationships, to help others. Listening is not easy: information overload, personal concerns, rapid thought, can understand 600 words per minute; average person speaks 100-140 words per minute, noise, background noises means it takes more e ort to listen. The challenge of listening: all listeners do not receive the same message, physiological factors, social roles, cultural background, personal interests, and needs all shape and distort raw data we hear into very di erent messages. Pseudo-listening: polite imitation of listening to mask inattention. Stage hogging: being interested only in expressing ones own ideas and not caring about what other people have to say. Selective listening: responding only to the parts of a speakers remarks that spark ones interest, rejecting everything else.
