OL109 Lecture 9: Communication Climates Lesson 9
Document Summary
Communication climate: the social tone of a relationship. Not specific activities, but the way people feel about each other as they carry out those activities. Communication climates are determined by the degree to which people see themselves as valued. Disconfirming: messages that signal a lack of regard. Disagreeing messages: messages that say you"re wrong. the way you present your ideas matter. Presenting and defending positions on issues while attacking positions taken by others. Better to deliver argument in supportive, affirming way and to not attack people, only issues. Complaints about personal characteristics attack a more fundamental part of the presenting self. Better to make behavioural complaints than personal complaints. Attack the self-concept of other people in order to inflict psychological pain . Disconfirming messages: messages that say you don"t exist/are not valued. Sieberg and larson (1971) found it was easiest to recognize disconfirming communication by observing responses to the messages of others.
