Symbol-arbitrary concept and represents something-must be agreed upon. Labels and names have drastic impact on most situation. Have you ever had a problem communication with someone closer to home because they did not understand certain symbols rule governed. Phonological rules-how words sound when pronounced reduce sematic confusion. Its become different over time and in context. Pragmatic rules-how a language is used in everyday interactions. Do you think more problems in communication occur b/c semantic or pragmatic meaning. Meaning is inside you not in the word. Words(sounds/physical symbols) and connected meaning-can change over time-many factors are involved. Ogden and richards-triangle of meaning- some referents have no actual existence. Problems arise when we assume people are using the same meaning as we are.
