Major labels eventually remake rock "n" roll in their own image. After elvis gets signed to rca they want him to appeal to larger fanbase. Do not want him to be controversial anymore. People often say music got really bad after the 1950s . However it was now targeted to teen demographic. Tame, safe, white music but no one called it tin pan alley anymore. By end of 1950s/1960s very few maintain momentum of crossing over. Carole king, paul simon and gerry goffin started out as brill songwriters. The loco-motion written by carole king, sung by little eva. Sometimes owned studio and equipment etc but did not actually have any expertise. Usually hired other people to deal with actual production aspects. Idea of modern producer started with people like phil spector. Helped shape idea of producer as an artist. Used whatever technology or instruments were at his disposal to get the sound he wanted.
