Document Summary

Gs101 - lecture 4 - the modern system of governance part 1. A nation refers to a group of people who regard themselves as being one people, a folk, by virtue of culture. A sense of belonging together as a meaningful group based on shared culture rooted in: We have more than one nation within our state (anglos, francos, first nations and more including immigrants) We have broken off kinship connections (because of modern technology) We create our own attachments through nation-states. Institutionalized and patterned set of beliefs, values, behaviours, and practices. Beliefs (ex ideas about meaning of life and death) Values (ex how to lead the good life?) Behaviours (ex greetings - handshakes, bows, etc; can give away whether you do or don"t belong in a society) Practices (ex covering/uncovering of head as sign of respect) The very nature of belonging is exclusive in saying some people belong in my group and others don"t.
