Motivation became more important in contemporary organizations due to the need for increased productivity to be globally competitive & rapid changes. Stable rules are being replaced by the need for flexibility and attention to customers need initiative, which depends on motivation. Motivation: extent to which persistent effort is directed toward a goal. Intrinsic motivation: stems from direct relationship between worker & task; self-applied: feelings of achievement, challenge, competence, interest in the job, hobbies. Extrinsic motivation: stems from work environment external to task; applied by others: pay, fringe benefits, policies, forms of supervision, awards for performance. Not all motivators fit neatly into the definitions compliment signals (cid:272)o(cid:373)pete(cid:374)(cid:272)e so it"s both. Existence of extrinsic motivators decreases motivating potential of intrinsic rewards people feel less competent/in control of behaviour. They think their performance is controlled by environment: occurs only under very limited conditions and are easily avoidable. Performance: extent that organizational member contributes to achieving organizational goals.
