Women's Studies 1020E Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Socialist Feminism, Class Discrimination, Sexual Objectification
Document Summary
Gender refers to personality traits, behaviors and attitudes attributed to or expected of individuals based on their sex. We perform gender according to a predetermined set of standards for what is masculine and what is feminine. Biological determinism-we are who we are because of biology. Social construction-we become who we are and are shaped by the environment. Gender policing-our assumptions about gender lead us to carefully monitor ourselves and others in our performance of gender. It devalue any deviations from the normative gender expressions. I"m fully aware of the fact it is almost impossible to talk about anything other than yourself or inanimate objects without using a gender specific pronoun. As if my ambiguity is a personal insult to their otherwise completely understandable reality. Men and women have been socialized to accept sexism as the norm. Pronouns reflect different personality attributes and career aspirations for men and women.
