Document Summary
In the 1830s the frock coat" was invented. Colours: colours for men remained somber (navy blue, brown, black) In 1920 the suit (with coat and pants of the same fabric) became popular and that is what we still see today. What do men in western culture not wear: skirts, heels, makeup, nylons, spaghetti straps/tank tops. Anne hollander thinks that this is because the male body must remain articulated (men can"t wear anything that covers up their body. ) There is nothing flowy or loose like women have: skirts like the kilt are different because it is heavy and swinging and associated with men of action. It is the suit that gives a man the classical body proportions that are still desired in a way no other piece of clothing does: the suit represents diplomacy, power, dignity, civility, self-control, and a confident adult masculinity.
