Shed some light on things that the classical theory failed to cover. Freud, an austrian psychiatrist, founded the psychoanalyic school of psychology. He was a major contributor to the world of the unconscious mind. Human psyche: made up of 3 parts: 1) id the pleasure principle (the devil on your shoulder) The part of the personality that is greedy. Houses our survival insincts (drives us to get water if we"re thirsty, food if we"re hungry, sex) It reminds us that we"re animals we aren"t born as civilized human beings. The hedonisic" part of our personality: 2) superego the conscience (moralizing) You develop a superego through the process of socializaion. It is the part of you that makes you feel guilty or shameful if you feel you"ve done something wrong. The superego"s job is to suppress the urges of the id: 3) ego the reality principle.
