Social and cultural factors that change the face of advertising, e. g. technology, literacy. People arnt reading and writing, low literacy rates, writing skills limited. Used symbols to communicate messages. 1200 bc: painted or carved messages on stones. First real alphabet developed during this time, felicians. 6th century bc: town criers, they were hired to get some sort of message across, this is called oral advertising. First state sanctioned form of advertising, and most common form of advertising throughout history. Advantage: could reach a large audience, can relate to people get them involved. Disadvantage: costly, if weather is bad you are going to have trouble using this form of advertising. Classical period: 400bc - 100ad. Slight move to literacy, oral advertising still the most common form. Street advertising, able to have different ways of getting their message across.
