Deductive & inductive reasoning: deductive: theory driven. Starts with a theory, formulates testable hypothesis, data gathering, findings. Go out into field, interview people, observe in natural environment, then formulating theories: grounded theory. Sociological reasoning: concept: an abstract idea that is expressed as a word or phrase, e. g. , social class, variable: categorical concept that refers to properties of people/things that can change over time, e. g. , level of education, income, occupation. Ethical conduct: resect for persons, confidentiality, debriefing: the later disclosure of all relevant details in cases where research participants cannot be told all of the information ahead of time, concern for welfare.
