Sociologists have four basic areas of inquiry: social structure, quesion social order, social change, social straiicaion. Valued resources are distributed (advantages through generaions) Inequaliies in wealth can threaten social stability (the poor resening the wealthy, for example, and demanding more equality) In many socieies, straiicaion, is much more pronounced, and basic skills are seldom the foundaion of primary social hierarchies. Status- the rank or posiion that person has within a social hierarchy. Ascribed status- can be a funcion of race, gender, age; assigned to individuals, typically at birth; are not chosen or earned, cannot be changed. Achieved status- posiion in a hierarchy that has been achieved by virtue of how well someone performs in some role (occupaional status) Focus paricularly on the rapidly changing european world that he observed during his lifeime. Time of industrial capitalism; marx observed, that industrial revoluion was a ime when both the level of economic producion and degree of inequality in society increased tremendously.
