Commodification = things that have been done in the private sphere, now people are paying for others to do it for them. Urbanization = large amounts of people moving into small places. Increase in people needing services in these areas. Movement of women into the paid labour force = with women moving into the labour force, they are needing to pay for services that they are no longer able to perform. Increase in money people have in the home. Hard to quantify or attach value: more personal, intangible, most often produced and consumed at the same time, are selling the presentation themselves and their labour power. 4 key characteristics: emotional labour, required to please both the employer and the customer simultaneously, dirty and/or degrading work, non-standard work, emotional labour: Because it is done in attempt to control workers and their interactions with customers.
