Religious Studies 1020A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Angelus, Steeple
Document Summary
There is some space between jesus and thomas. Thomas wasn"t there the first time, he doesn"t believe. The setting is a public 14th century setting. St peter in the right corner almost on tip toes. Jesus is on the left, after being on the right in the other ones. A tendency for artists to place the focal point on the right. Why is there a rip in thomas shirt. Artists don"t leave out any details, there is always a reason. The doubt that was in thomas is beginning to break. The rip is white underneath, like jesus" clothes. Caravaggio is known for background being a contrast between dark and light. Caravaggio has taken most people out of the scene. He enlarges a particular part, invites us in. Thomas was nervous, jesus has to pull his hand toward him. The bodies are not in full, we see the top part of them. He draws us in by enlargement, colours, contrast.
