Beauty is what is pleasing to the eye. Beauty intends to draw us out from ourselves. There is something that holds us to beautiful objects. We never fully get a grasp on it. In christian belief invisible dimension of god desiring us. Beauty and the sublime, hard concepts to grasp, not easy to define. Rhetorical sublime- language that is impressive rather than something that is densely argued. Ancient understanding of sublime undergoes a shift in meaning. Appeal to emotion, shocking mixed with fear and dread. Feeling of awe produced when you look at grand things (cliffs, mountains etc) Appealing to the sense of the natural sublime.
